The Legend of the Daimyō and the Last Oath

During the Sengoku Jidai, Takeda Harunobu, a powerful Daimyō from Shinano, was known for his unwavering commitment to the buke code and his deep respect for meiyo (honor) and chūgi (loyalty) to his shukun (lord). When his forces were attacked by the Uesugi clan, Harunobu prepared for battle, donning his ceremonial yoroi and rallying his troops.

In the fierce shōbu at Kawanakajima, he faced Uesugi Kenshin, his rival, who, recognizing his honor, proposed a one-on-one duel. After hours of battle, Kenshin suggested a truce, admiring Harunobu’s code of honor.

However, a traitor within Harunobu's ranks forced him to make a difficult choice. In line with seppuku, Harunobu took his own life to preserve his honor. His katana now rests in a temple, and his legend lives on, reminding all of the enduring values of chūgi, meiyo, and budō.
